He’s orange, he’s fun-loving and he’s the cat who sets your daily temperature.
Have you ever wondered what affects the daily temperatures in Schaumburg? Some meteorologists throw out terms like barometric pressure, inversions and weather fronts. But smart people (and everyone at the Schaumburg Weather Making Department) know that the one REAL factor affecting your temperature is a small orange bundle of energy called Mittens.
While Tamika is in charge of Temperature at the Weather Making Department, her 23 cats affect what temperature she sets the city’s master thermostat each day. And Mittens, their feline ringleader, is happy to do his share of causing trouble to fluster the weather team and get things nice and toasty for residents! Remember the summer day last year when the city set a new heat record of 107 degrees? Rumor has it that Mittens caught 7 squirrels and one skunk in the nearby park and set them all loose in the air vents above the department. People and papers were flying while stress levels went through the roof!
“I remember when he was just a cute little ball of orange,” says Tamika. “It didn’t take long, though, before he made sure everyone knew who was really in charge. Even the dogs in the neighborhood bring him cans of tuna to stay on his good side. He’s simply the smartest cat I know. And with 23 of them, I know a LOT of cats!”
So next time the temperature goes up and you start to sweat, you can just smile and know that Mittens has done something cute and outrageous to cause the humans making your weather to get excited.
